includes every link on THIS WEBSITE. For a while now, 16 years to be exact, I've been plucking gray hairs from my head, and highlighting my dull brown hair occasionally. I've never really taken the plunge and done an all-over color on my hair. Seems to me, though, the 2 things that fool people age-wise are fitness and hair color. If you keep your body fairly trim, in a healthy weight range, and have some kind of color besides gray or white on your hair, it's hard to tell if you're 40, 50, or 60 years old! So that's been my aim for a while - to fool everyone. But the time has come to stop plucking or I'm seriously going to start looking pretty thin...
I read an article in the paper over Thanksgiving weekend that had this incredible fact in it: The woman who started THIS WEBSITE had spent $52,000 over 2 decades coloring her hair. UNBELIEVABLE. So now that has me feeling guilty before I ever get started thinking about hair color. I've always been a natural kind of girl with minimum makeup and tried to dress in a way that would please God, so that plays a factor, too.
What do you guys think?
Should I try to do it myself to cut costs? (I've done my own highlights - probably obvious to you)
Do I do salon color just a few times a year ( to cut costs)?
Should I embrace the gray?

Hmmm, this is a tough one. I don't have grey and I color my hair. I figure when I do have grey I'll color my hair. Although my mom has super short grey hair that is really pretty. It came back grey after chemo and she just stopped messing with coloring. I wish I could see each style on you. Maybe one of those websites where you can see different options? Definitely go grey or do color, but STOP PLUCKING. That's crazy, and it hurts!
I tend toward embracing the gray.
There are lots of beautiful women of all ages with lovely gray hair. (Gena's mom being one of them) When it is styled and well cared for, I see it as a crown made of hard work and wisdom.
I'm going to Amen the above comments. I have stopped "blonding" my no-longer-blond hair and it has been a bit liberating. I don't have grey hair but I tend to think that I would go for the grey. My mom has let her's go and it's a really pretty angelic white. I like it! We will see if I say the same thing after I find my first grey hair.
Gena, your Mom's hair is really cute. I have noticed that blue-eyed women look especially cute with silver/gray hair, and of course, I don't have blue eyes.
Now with all this talk I am suddenly feeling really self conscious!
Thanks for the feedback, girls!
I've highlightened on and off for years to cover the grey, or just to lighten it - since it grew darker and darker with each childbirth (that's a 4 color darkening!). Anyway, I really like pretty grey hair, it's just the process I don't like. I like the at-home kits and Joe is great to pull it through, but after 15 years of self-coloring and 6 years of self-cutting, a few years ago I decided to go to a professional, but one who doesn't charge much. Also, I don't have to go more than 5 times a year, so not too bad.
You look great! Don't worry about it at all.
I say do what makes you feel good. It may change each year and that"s okay! Robin, I honestly see your beautiful smile way before I notice anything else!
Wow... look at Sarah the word-smith! (With whom I agree, by the way.) But I'm a cheapie. I went to a salon to have highlights done one time, almost passed out as I paid the bill, and said, "Never again. Good grief!" (And I'm terrified of trying to do it myself.) Also, if I may quote Billy Crystal from some years back, "Da'ling, you look fabulous!" -- Catherine Pigg
