SMALL HOUSE BIG MOMENTS...

Thanksgiving is always special in our family.  There's nothing special about the place.  It's a tiny town in southwestern Oklahoma.  There's nothing special about the house, it's tight with all of us.  The food is delicious (to us), but nothing gourmet.  It is special because it's the one time of year all the family gathers together.
                                                (Just the grandkids, spouses, grands)

When a family with six kids matures, there's no way all the grandkids, spouses, and great-grands can all be somewhere at the same time.  But we had 58 this year at Thanksgiving, which is a great number.  At the request of Grandmother, made long ago in the 1980's, Thanksgiving would be her thing and she didn't care when any other holiday happened.  So most try really hard to be at Thanksgiving.  That request has turned out pretty well.

What also makes it special is that over the years, we've made some fine traditions.  Wednesday night is the All-Church Singing, each song led by a different person in the audience.  This year the youngest songleader was 4 years old!  Wednesday night singing is followed by delicious party foods and games at Grandmother's house.  Thanksgiving morning is the Turkey Trot, a run down the road to the cemetery and back (about a 5 K).  There is an actual trophy!  After the Thanksgiving meal and some relaxing, we head two blocks away to another relative's house to do the Pumpkin Bash! It's kind of like pumpkin baseball, only messier.  :0  Afterwards, lots of dominoes and card games go throughout the night.  The children are entranced with all the wonderful old toys that Grandmother has and just seem to roll with the crazy schedule of the day.

I've been reading a book called The Power of Moments, by Chip and Dan Heath.  Thanks, Sugarhill for the recommendation.  I realized our Thanksgiving is a great example of creating defining moments for many in our family.

So thankful for Christian family and the desire to keep family commitments strong!  Read the book and look for ways  you can do this if you don't have it right now.  Future generations will thank you!

TWO NEW THINGS THIS THANKSGIVING...

1.  Tucker came with us.

2.  Son #1 brought his lovely girlfriend!  There's a saying in the family:  If you bring somebody to Thanksgiving, there's probably a wedding in the future!  We certainly hope so!

I think it's safe to say both of them had a good time.  Here we are doing the Turkey Trot in the rain Thanksgiving morning.  They both participated!  Tucker especially enjoyed checking out the cows near our race route.

We enjoyed our Pumpkin Bash after Thanksgiving dinner like always!

The yucky weather kept us inside more but no one is complaining about rain in southwestern Oklahoma!

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU CANDY CORN...

you make turkey cookies!  I thought I'd try this new flavored candy corn, "Pumpkin Spice," and to my surprise, no one in my family liked them!  So, what to do with them?  Pinterest, of course!  These turkey cookies were a super cute idea and easy, too!  Maybe somebody will like them at Thanksgiving!

THROUGH THE EYES OF MY 21 YR OLD...

My college kid just finished editing a little video of our Thanksgiving.  It's funny to see his perspective...TAKE A LOOK!

RANDOM THINGS I LEARNED AT THANKSGIVING...

FROM MY COLLEGE SON:  Do you know the population of Japan has so many aged people that sales of adult diapers have surpassed baby diapers?

FROM MY SISTERS-IN-LAW:  Never admit that you don't do dishes without dishwashing gloves. (I am usually the food putter upper and table setter)  But I think I know what they are getting me for Christmas this year!   :(

FROM MY DAUGHTER'S BOYFRIEND:  Guys with dreadlocks can be extremely sweet and polite.

FROM MY GREAT NEPHEW:  Spit-up always happens when you are wearing a new scarf.

FROM MY BROTHER-IN-LAW:  It's okay to reveal that someone's pregnant during a prayer!

FROM MY OTHER BROTHER-IN-LAW:  Preachers aren't necessarily compassionate card players.

FROM MY 13 YR OLD NEPHEW:  Pink casts are cool.

FROM GOD:  My mouth still gets me into trouble sometimes!

THANKFUL FOR THE OLD AND THE NEW...

A new mascot on the Thanksgiving dessert table - so ugly he's cute!
New babies added to the family
New desserts to try...

Old favorites like playing Liverpool Rummy

and Pumpkin Bashing

Eating at a new place on the way home...

And a new one joining us for the weekend!

It was another good holiday - different without my father-in-law, but still such a blessing!  I missed his rolls and his love of domino playing and yes even the fussing back and forth between them trying to remember all the little details of how to get the Thanksgiving meal together.  But it was good.  God is good!

SOME DAYS ARE JUST LIKE THIS...

And I'll join the Thankfulness bandwagon and say how thankful I am for a husband who comes and picks up the pieces, THEN makes something else and gets it to my luncheon on time.

WHAT A MAN!

A NEW ADDITION TO THE ANNUAL PUMPKIN BASH...

was gourds!  We found out that green gourds are pretty juicy!  Click on that picture for a closer look!  Nasty.

Other than that, we had a wonderful holiday, filled with all the things we love:

9 a.m. Turkey Trot - The green team!
Lori always surprises us with a different cheesecake to add to the Thanksgiving meal!  Chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake is pretty fantastic.
4 different tables of chaos, I mean games, going on at once! We are especially blessed to have my father-in-law still with us this holiday, after a rough year of cancer treatment.
Annual Cousin Pumpkin Bash - wow, are they growing up! (see previous posts under Thanksgiving if you're wondering what a pumpkin bash is)
Their traditional photo on top the biggest pumpkin

Well it's hard for me to pick one favorite thing about this special time with the family but I have to say what means the most to  me is the Wednesday night All Church Singing time. Not only do we sing for an entire hour, but each song is led and chosen by a different song leader.  Young and old, big and small, and I think if I counted right, 13 of the song leaders were from our family.  It's hard to not watch them the entire song, but I'm getting better at worshipping during this time.  Love watching these young men growing up getting involved in worship!  Yes, we are truly blessed.
