BEAUTIFUL PLACES IN ARKANSAS...

My Mother had a big birthday recently, and my sister and I started taking her on little road trips every 5 years, so it was time for another!  Mom had hinted a few times about a gardener on public television, P. Allen Smith, who has a farm/home tour in Arkansas somewhere...so I researched and found out more about it several months ago.  So that became our destination!

We stopped in Fort Smith for lunch and a tour of Miss Laura's house.

Miss Laura's is the only bordello on the National Register of Historic places.  It's got an interesting history and is filled with beautiful period furniture.  It also serves as an Arkansas visitor center. We drove on to West Little Rock where we stayed in a VRBO.

The next day we headed out into the hills past Pinnacle Mountain to Moss Mountain Farm, P. Allen's home.  Mom was so excited!  We were greeted with this amazing old post oak tree by his home.  Turns out he selected that spot to build the home because of that tree.
The home is only about 20 years old, but made to look old.  We toured inside and also the gardens outside.  All of it was very beautiful and interesting!

After touring the home and gardens, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch!

P. Allen came in after lunch and did a Q & A about roses!

The next day we went to do some things in Little Rock - the Esse purse museum was so interesting!  It had a lot more than purses. It was all about fashion through the decades.  My mother felt like she had taken a walk down memory lane!  Nearby we ate lunch and enjoyed some of the gift shops.

The Old Mill is in a lush park near downtown.  It's claim to fame is that a scene from the movie "Gone With The  Wind" was filmed here back in the 1930's.

We went to the Bernice Garden on Sunday to see the Farmer's Market and the sculptures.  It was a nice way to end our weekend!

It's always fun to do a little road trip with family!

ESCAPE ROOM ENTERTAINMENT...

We just celebrated a couple of family birthdays by going out for dinner and going to an Escape room! It was a lot more fun than I expected (the birthday girl said the same)! We had a couple of funny things that happened that slowed us down, but we did escape in time.  One thing that happened was we did actually press the HINT button when we got stumped, and when they came to help us and we told them we had tried the numbers we found from the clues to open the combination lock, they discovered it had been reset and they had to cut the lock off with deadbolt cutters.  Then they gave us back 10 minutes on the clock.  Also, there was a purse on the table and we all thought it belonged to someone in the room, but it was actually one of the clues and had a key in it to another lock.  :)

I didn't contribute much to the solving of the puzzle but I did find the gun (a toy)! Mostly, I enjoyed just watching our kids interact with each other. There was Son #1 who was fiddling with the physical props in the room, Son #2 who went to work cracking codes with letters and numbers, and my daughter who was trying different combinations on a locked box.  Along with their spouses, it was fun watching them work.

Doing something different was kinda fun!  Good to get out of the norm every once in a while.  But that room definitely would've been a challenge for me on my own.  Grab some friends and try it!

KETO BIRTHDAY MEAL FOR MY SON...

Well, son #1 just had a birthday and has been really into the KETO diet lately...in fact, he's lost 30 pounds!  Didn't know he even had that much to lose!  But he's over 6 feet tall, so I guess those kind of guys can carry more than you think.  Anyway, I made a Keto meal for him.  It turned out pretty well - except for the cake!  It wasn't pretty but it still tasted good!

Bacon Chicken Broccoli casserole - this was so good!
Green Salad with lots of veggies
Roasted Red potatoes (I got the really small ones from Little Potato Co.)
Wheat Rolls (these were for the Non-Ketos)

Strawberries with a little Swerve
Whipped cream

We ate inside much to my disappointment.  But it is pretty hot now, and Son #1 HATES bugs so that would not be a very fun birthday dinner for him.  I was also glad to have a Sous Chef - a college student who is living with us right now!

My sad Keto Vanilla Pound cake! But it tasted good!

This is what happens when you let the birthday boy put the whipped cream on everyone's dessert!

I'm so thankful to have these moments!  They are few and far between nowadays.  Afterwards, we all went to church and had a great time singing in our Wonder of Worship class!  That was the icing on the cake for me!

WHEN YOUR KIDS INVITE YOU SOMEWHERE...

WOW, How fun for the tables to turn and all of a sudden YOU are invited someplace by the kids!  It's started happening with Mother's Day at my daughter's house and now a weekend lake trip with my son and his sweet wife!

We stayed at her parent's mobile home that had a gorgeous view of Lake Tenkiller.  It was a great time of reminiscing for us, especially since my parents owned a lake house and boat there for many years before my Dad's death in 2001.  At that time they sold it all and despite our best intentions, we've only visited a couple of times since then.

Ready to check out the lake - including Tucker!

Happy 26th birthday to our son!

Beautiful sunset from the deck of the cabin! We enjoyed this special time with our kids.  Kinda fun to not be in charge but just going along with what they had planned.

RED RIVER, NEW MEXICO...40 YEARS LATER

We had a family vacation way back in the 70's to Red River, New Mexico - hadn't been there since!  But for my Mother's 75th birthday my sister and I wanted to take her somewhere nice and cool for that special day.  We chose to visit Red River again after all these years.  The size hadn't changed much but there are many more small hotels and condos, along with restaurants and shops.  No big name hotel chains or big box stores.  It's really charming.  You can walk to everything!  We had lots of good times just chatting, laughing, eating out and challenging Mom with a few adventuresome activities!
Lots of cute places for pictures downtown

At the restaurant at the top of the mountain

Riding up on the ski lift - a 30 minute ride

Mallette Park and cracking ourselves up over selfies!

Mountain tubing

Renting a 4wdrive for a few hours and going up to Greenie's Peak
Hike in Mallette Park

We did spend an afternoon in Taos, too!

At the Mexican Imports store and Taos Plaza

Bent St. Cafe for birthday lunch - so delicious!

Thankful.
