MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY TOPIC...

SEXTING!!! I let him skip school today...I don't know if that was the right decision or not. But when he told me what this special all-day assembly was going to be about, I was a little put off that we as parents weren't notified. Er...were we? Maybe it just didn't make it out of the backpack. Anyway, If you see a few middle school boys playing hooky today, you know why. All of them ganged up on me last night in the car and promised me they had no problem with that particular problem and would never do it. I think I'll say a little prayer right now...

Seriously? That doesn't seem like a topic that should be covered in a public school assembly. That's insane. I would like to think that most middle school kids don't have a clue what that is, but I'm sure I'm wrong. Scary.

I sure hope we get all the letters informing us of what they are going to be discussing. I know my aunt has been put out on some of the topics and not being informed prior to them. I think majority of the kid's are ignorant of that stuff and then become curious after the big fuss.

Wow. I think a sick day was very justified.

Unfortunately I am familiar with this topic. I DO think the school should have notified parents though???

As a teacher of MS, sexting often happens to kids that aren't trying to be involved in it. Often girl's will take a friends phone and start randomly sending VERY inapp. messages and or pics to random boys. If your child has given out his/her number they are vulnerable to this happening to them. It then sparks interest or simply exposes them to trash that they were not even looking for. I had a co-worker this year w/ a son who received such messages from girls he did not even know. I also know of a local CofC that had it going on in their YG :( If it hasn'y happened yet, it is very possible it will. I have talked to D about it, but he doesn't have texting as of now, just basically told him to let us know, if he were to receive such a thing... may be too much info here but it is a growing problem, so I thought I'd share. I know i was shocked when I heard about it.

Yes, it happened here in Tipton last year and something computer-related happened this year. I did talk to Lauren about it. Need to Zachary. It's sad that it has to be. We don't send our children to things like that here because we talk to them about it ourselves. Sadly, though, most parents don't (here anyway). I'm surprised they didn't let parents know about the subject.

I had my DVR on pause after doing some programming, and when it came on it was in the middle of a show called The Doctors, with the subject of The Truth About Teen Sex (3-4 PM today). One girl was saying that you'd better start educating kids about sex in elementary and middle school, because it's too late by the time they get to high school. It was quite graphic in what teens are doing now and the diseases they can get from it.

On the one hand it makes me think, "Maybe this is why people homeschool!" But on the other hand, all this stuff was around when my daughter was that age, and she mananged to get out of public school system unscathed and with an excellent education. She was, however, ready to go to a Christian university after being in the real world all that time!

Anyway, I do think it shows how important it is to talk to our kids and teach our kids and know where they are and what they are doing and with whom (being from church is no guarantee). And start young!
